Are we living in a “wounded world,” as some pundits infer? I have another way to look at and interpret our current reality.
If, indeed, “the universe is expanding exactly as it must,” as cosmologist Brian Swimme and others proclaim, and if, indeed, destruction is as much a part of creation as construction, then we are not living in a wounded world, but an evolving world. A world that is in the process of becoming. An unfinished universe which, many claim, spins our “imperfect” world. I cannot hold to this last view since perfection is an illusion.
If we go on actively perceiving our world to be damaged, somehow wounded – then that is how/what it shall evolve towards. If we perceive the same set of data as the imperfect-not-yet-finished (work of art?) evolving as it must – some construction, some dissolution, some new creations, some deaths of the familiar —what does that bode? Holding that perspective, how would we subsequently treat one another and our environment? What would that look like? More “gloom & doom” or more hopeful? Although I cannot really predict, my intuition says it is better for the individual to hold on to hope of creation and have faith in the universe than to hold on to the “shame, blame, and damnation” of the wounded world mindset.
Much of my work activity, both directly and indirectly, has focused on women’s health issues and the marketing of solutions and/or education pertaining to these issues. Over time it has been my personal experience and belief that how the individual perceives his/her health “challenge” will effect their eventual outcome as well as affecting their broader environment.
I was the “poor little epileptic girl” for whom no one had any great expectations. Somehow I had the wisdom to choose not to agree with this assessment. In a hit-or-miss sort of fashion, I behaved accordingly. At the risk of being immodest, although there have been no Nobel Prizes or Academy Awards, I have achieved a fair amount in my life so far, and I know that, for the greater part, the communities in which I have traveled have been positively affected.
Microcosm, macrocosm. Cosmology. We co-create reality. This is our responsibility. And it is not to be done too seriously (it is called “enlightenment,” after all).
Go forth and create your universe with reverence for beauty and knowledge that the universe, our globe, and we are all evolving exactly as we must.
